Tattooing has become very widespread in Europe, especially in France, where many people are now tattooed. However, tattooed skin needs special care, and monoi and Tamanu oil can become part of your daily routine! Here's how.
The effects of tattoos on the skin
Whether you've succumbed to the temptation of a flash tattoo on the beach or, on the contrary, are turning your body into a work of art, tattooing is now widely accepted. However, it's important to remember that tattooing is a traumatic experience for the skin, which needs to be soothed with specific care to prevent inflammation or skin fragility (scabbing). This could damage your new work of art on the skin!

Protecting tattooed skin
After a tattoo, it's essential to keep the protective film on for between 2 and 6 hours, as indicated by the professional who pricked you. This freezes the ink and protects your skin from infection. You should then clean the tattoo with an antiseptic product 2 or 3 times a day for 2 weeks. This will keep bacteria at bay. Gentle circular movements are recommended. Then protect the skin with a moisturizing product, again using circular movements, until fully absorbed.
Moisturizing creams for babies' bottoms are perfect, or there are healing creams specifically for tattoos. These are easier to apply and less greasy. After 2 weeks of treatment, you can return to a classic routine, i.e. washing your skin with soap or shower gel, then moisturizing your skin with a moisturizing or emollient cream, such as Tamanu oil or monoi. Of course, avoid exposure to the sun for the first 2 weeks after a tattoo!
Monoi moisturizes and protects tattoos
After the essential care phase for your new tattoo, monoi is one of the moisturizing products that should be used daily on tattooed skin! In Polynesia, all tattoo artists will tell you to apply monoi oil to your tattoo to revive the colors and give your tattoo more radiance. But don't apply monoi to your tattoo before exposure to the sun! In fact, it's contraindicated to expose yourself to the sun or go swimming at the beach for 1 month after getting a tattoo.
Coconut oil has natural antiseptic properties, thanks in particular to its content of capric, caprylic and lauric fatty acids. As a result, monoi will prolong the protective, antimicrobial effect of your epidermis. It also plays a moisturizing role, keeping your skin hydrated.
It's also worth noting that the presence of vitamin E in monoï will prevent dryness in tattooed skin, while keeping free radicals away from your epidermis for a "young skin" effect. Monoï also has the added benefit of promoting cell regeneration. So don't hesitate to apply a thin layer to your tattoos!
Why use Tamanu oil for post-tattoo care?
L'tamanu oil is often considered a treasure of nature, especially when it comes to skin care. Tamanu oil is renowned for its remarkable healing properties which promote cell regeneration, enabling tattooed skin to repair itself more rapidly. Following a tattoo, it's not uncommon for the skin to suffer from redness and swelling. Tamanu oil, thanks to its anti-inflammatory components, alleviates these symptoms, offering relief and reducing healing time.
Moreover, post-tattoo infections are a major concern, and Tamanu oil, with its antibacterial properties, forms a protective barrier against pathogens, reducing the risk of infection. When compared to other products available for post-tattoo care, Tamanu oil stands out for its purity and multiple benefits without the chemical additives that can irritate the skin.
How to use Tamanu oil after a tattoo?
It's essential to wait until the tattoo wound begins to heal, usually a few hours later or the following day, before starting to apply the oil. Once the tattooed area is clean and dry, Tamanu oil can be gently massaged into the skin. Depending on the size and location of the tattoo, it is advisable to apply the oil two or three times a day. To apply, a few drops of oil can be poured onto the fingers, then gently massaged into the tattooed area with circular movements, taking care not to press too hard. This routine should be followed for at least two weeks, or until the tattoo is fully healed.
Precautions to be taken
Before applying the oil to the tattooed area, a skin test is recommended to avoid possible allergic reactions. It's crucial to use pure, organic Tamanu oil, reading labels carefully to avoid products containing additives or preservatives. Tamanu oil can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun, so it is advisable to avoid direct exposure to the sun for the first few days after application. In the event of an unusual reaction or persistent irritation, it is best to consult a dermatologist or other healthcare professional.
