HANDCRAFTED

Each pareo from the Papeete Market is made in Tahiti using the traditional tie-dye technique, known in French as “teinture par nouage.” The fabric is first hand-dyed to create its luminous color gradients. Stencils are then placed on the fabric before it is exposed to the sun. The areas covered by the stencils gradually lighten, while the areas exposed to the sun retain their color, revealing the magnificent floral patterns that make each creation unique.

This traditional method is still practiced by many Polynesian families. They also use fern leaves, coconut palm fronds, foliage from their gardens, or even fishing nets to create ever-changing designs.

The dye is made in Moorea. Solvent-free, it guarantees vibrant, luminous colors that are particularly lightfast. Your pareo will retain the full intensity of its colors for a long time without fading.

Since each piece is handcrafted, you may notice slight irregularities, subtle variations in color, small plant residues, or a few loose threads. These details reflect authentic Polynesian craftsmanship and are a testament to local production, far removed from mass-produced industrial goods.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

The cotton fabric may feel slightly stiffer when you first receive it due to the artisanal dyeing process. After an initial cold wash, it will naturally regain its softness and comfort.

We recommend washing the pareo separately the first time to prevent color transfer to other garments. Subsequent washes can also be done in cold water to preserve the vibrancy of the colors over time.
