Full description for Papeete Market Pareo Pink and Blue Turtle

Let yourself be charmed by this sarong from the Papeete Market, featuring gorgeous shades of pink and blue, enhanced by large Polynesian turtles—symbols of wisdom, protection, and longevity. Handcrafted in Tahiti from cotton voile, each piece is unique and identical to those found on the stalls of the famous Papeete Market.

With its large Polynesian turtles harmoniously arranged against a background of fuchsia pink, lagoon blue, and touches of purple, this pareo evokes all the richness of the Tahitian lagoon. The fern and tropical vegetation motifs add depth to the design while highlighting the turtle, Polynesia’s iconic animal and a symbol of protection, peace, and travel. Made of cotton voile, this pareo measures approximately 110 x 175 cm, offering great versatility for both the beach and vacation.

Important information: The photos are for illustrative purposes only. Each pareo is entirely handmade in Tahiti using traditional artisanal methods. The piece you receive will feature the same dominant colors, the same style, and the same patterns as the one shown in the photo, but their arrangement, intensity, or certain details may vary slightly. These variations are part of the charm of a handcrafted creation and ensure that each pareo is a one-of-a-kind piece.

HANDCRAFTED

Each pareo from the Papeete Market is crafted in Tahiti using the traditional tie-dye technique, known in French as “teinture par nouage.” The fabric is first hand-dyed to create its luminous color gradients. Stencils are then placed on the fabric before it is exposed to the sun. The areas covered by the stencils gradually lighten, while the areas exposed to the sun retain their color, revealing the magnificent patterns that characterize each creation.

This ancestral method is still widely practiced by Polynesian families. They also use fern leaves, coconut palm fronds, foliage from their gardens, and even fishing nets to create ever-changing designs.

The dye used is made in Moorea. Solvent-free, it produces vibrant, luminous colors that are lightfast. Your pareo will retain its full intensity over time without fading.

Since each piece is handmade, slight irregularities, minor variations in shade, or small traces of plant fibers or threads may be present. These characteristics are a testament to authentic Polynesian craftsmanship and set this pareo apart from mass-produced, industrial items.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

The cotton fabric may feel slightly stiffer upon arrival due to the artisanal dyeing process. After the first cold wash, it regains its full suppleness and becomes exceptionally soft.

To preserve its colors over time, we recommend washing the pareo separately the first time to prevent color transfer to other fabrics. Subsequent washes can be done in cold water.

STYLING TIPS

Measuring approximately 110 x 175 cm, this pareo can be worn around the waist, transformed into a beach dress, used as a light shawl, or simply laid out on the sand. Its breathable cotton fabric and vibrant colors make it an essential accessory for your days at the beach, your vacations, or to add an authentically Polynesian touch to your everyday life.
