HANDCRAFTED

Each pareo from the Papeete Market is crafted in Tahiti using the traditional tie-dye technique, known in French as “teinture par nouage.” After being hand-dyed to create its magnificent color gradients, the fabric is covered with various stencils. It is then exposed to the sun: the areas protected by the stencils remain lighter, while the exposed parts retain their color, revealing the botanical and decorative patterns that make each pareo unique.

This artisanal method is still widely practiced by many Polynesian families. Depending on the design, they also use fern leaves, coconut palm fronds, foliage from their gardens, or even fishing nets to create natural effects that cannot be reproduced industrially.

The dye used is made in Moorea. Solvent-free, it produces particularly vibrant colors and is highly lightfast, allowing the pareo to retain its full brilliance over time.

Because it is entirely handmade, each pareo may have slight irregularities, minor variations in shade, or a few residual plant fibers or threads that can simply be removed. These small details are a testament to authentic artisanal craftsmanship by a Polynesian family in Tahiti. You’re purchasing a genuine local pareo, a far cry from mass-produced items.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

The cotton fabric may feel slightly stiffer upon arrival due to the artisanal dyeing process. After the first cold wash, it naturally regains its full suppleness and becomes exceptionally soft.

For the first wash, we recommend washing the pareo separately to prevent color transfer onto other garments. Subsequent washes can be done in cold water to preserve the vibrancy of the colors over time.
