HANDCRAFTED

Each pareo is handmade in Tahiti using the traditional tie-dye technique, known in French as “teinture par nouage.” The fabric is first dyed to create its beautiful color gradients. Stencils are then placed over certain areas of the fabric before it is exposed to the sun. The areas protected by these stencils remain lighter, while the exposed parts retain their color, revealing the sarong’s distinctive patterns.

This method has been passed down for generations and is still widely used by many Polynesian families. Depending on the design, they also use fern leaves, coconut palm fronds, various foliage from their gardens, or even fishing nets to create unique patterns.

The dye used is made in Moorea. Solvent-free, it produces particularly vibrant and luminous colors while offering excellent lightfastness. Your pareo will retain the full intensity of its colors for years to come.

Because this is a truly handcrafted product, you may notice slight irregularities, subtle variations in color, or very small residues of plant fibers or threads that can be removed. These details are a testament to the handiwork of a Polynesian family in Tahiti and are what give a local pareo its unique charm—a far cry from mass-produced, industrial items.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Due to the artisanal dyeing process, the cotton fabric may feel slightly stiffer upon arrival. After the first cold wash, the fabric regains its full suppleness and becomes exceptionally soft.

For the first wash, we recommend washing the pareo separately to prevent color transfer to other fabrics. Subsequent washes can also be done in cold water to preserve the vibrancy of the colors over time.

STYLING TIPS
